The Gilchrist Foundation is a Friend of PBS
The Gilchrist Foundation is committed to supporting institutions that foster education, creativity and civic engagement. Among these valued partners is Iowa PBS, which provides meaningful programming and services to communities across the state. Through long-time philanthropic support, the Foundation helps ensure that Iowa PBS can continue delivering high-quality, locally produced content.
For more than 50 years, Iowa PBS has offered programming that reflects a broad spectrum of interests and demographics and the Gilchrist Foundation has been a consistent supporter. In 2024, a $65,000 project grant was awarded to fund the second season of Road Trip Iowa. An identical grant was provided in 2023 to support the program’s inaugural season.
Support for Iowa PBS aligns with the Foundation’s mission. Founder Jocelyn Gilchrist demonstrated a lifelong commitment to public broadcasting. Continued funding of Iowa PBS projects reflects that enduring legacy.
Road Trip Iowa Explores the State’s Beauty
Road Trip Iowa invites viewers on an exploration of Iowa’s scenic byways, highlighting historic landmarks, unique cultural attractions and the natural beauty of the state.
Season 2 premiered on April 9 and includes 10 new episodes. Featured destinations include Yellow River State Forest, the Grant Wood Art Gallery and other notable sites. Episode 3 highlights the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway North, a 200-mile route beginning north of Sioux City and extending south to St. Joseph, Missouri.
“Road Trip Iowa is a fun way to learn about the state of Iowa. Each week, we're off to a different location—to learn history, visit a state park or drop in on a local business,” said Iowa PBS Senior Producer and Director Tyler Brinegar. “When we put these stories together, you really get a feel for the area’s culture and a sense of how past generations have influenced the way we live now. We hope viewers feel that, too, and get the itch to go explore for themselves.”
New episodes premiere on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and repeat Saturdays at 9 a.m. The series is also available to stream on iowapbs.org and on the PBS app.

About the Gilchrist Foundation
The Gilchrist Foundation was established by Jocelyn Gilchrist of Sioux City to honor her family and their philanthropic interests. Jocelyn supported the arts, wildlife and conservation, public broadcasting and disaster relief throughout her lifetime both personally and through the Foundation. After her death in 2008, the Gilchrist Foundation continued to support these philanthropic interests.
Today, the mission of the Gilchrist Foundation is to further the philanthropy of its founder and her family with an emphasis on fostering the long-term viability of the charity and enabling special projects rather than supplying current operating funds.
